BLOG TOUR: There Once Were Stars by Melanie McFarlane (REVIEW & GIVEAWAY)

There Once Were StarsPeace. Love. Order. Dome. That’s the motto that the Order has given the residents of Dome 1618 to live by. Natalia Greyes is a resident of Dome 1618, a covered city protected from the deadly radiation that has poisoned the world outside for four generations. Nat never questioned the Order, until one day she sees a stranger on the outside of the dome. Now Nat wants answers. Is there life outside the dome and if so, what has the Order been hiding from everyone?

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

MY THOUGHTS
There may be a lot of dystopian novels out there (though, the genre is beginning to simmer down), but I still love reading them and there are still so many with new ideas. This one caught my eye from the first time I read the synopsis. This book, while having dystopian themes we are used to, brings a new idea to the table and does a great job.

Nat lives inside a dome with her grandparents. Her family and others has lived in the dome for generations, ever since a disease spread outside and they had to bomb the world to rid of it. Live in the dome is controlled and strict, but the government has their reasons. That doesn't stop Nat from sneaking off into the (forbidden) forest everyday since her parents died. It's on one of these days that she notices two strangers outside her dome. But that can't be possible. There's nothing alive outside the dome, there's too much radiation. That is how her parents died. But Nat will discover the truth behind the two strangers, the dome, and even her parents death.

Like I said, I never seem to tire of dystopians, but there's something about dystopians involving domes that just demand to be read. Maybe it's because of the Gone series, one of all-time favorite series, who knows. Anyway, I thought the world-building in this book was very well-developed. McFarlane described the dome, and even the outside of the dome, very well. I was able to get a clear picture of the world. The history was also explained (slowly, no info-dump here) and made sense.

I liked Nat as a main character. She's a strong and smart MC. She had trouble seeing what was right in front of her at times, especially when it came to the romance, but I liked her as the MC.

The romance was something that I was okay with, but not too wild about. First of all, I would like to mention that while there are two guys interested in Nat, one of them is kind of in the friend-zone and it's obvious from the start, so that wasn't a problem. I also happened to like the love interest. My problem was that the romance was a frustrating boomerang. They would be into each other, then they weren't talking (because they were unsure of "feelings"), and back again. It got tiring, especially when I just want them to get together and kick government butt.

As for the ending, it felt abrupt to me. Though, that may be my fault. I thought I had 20 pages left (ending up being 1 1/2, I was reading an ebook and I guess the page count was off) and I was hurrying to finish it before I had to go somewhere. So I might have rushed it. But I remember thinking "Oh my gosh I'm almost done and so much is happening" only to turn the page to find a few paragraphs left...
Will there be a sequel? Because I want one now.

IN CONCLUSION
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book! I loved the story and I was able to become immersed in the world! The romance bothered at times and I kind of what more books (wish is a good thing), but I overall liked this book. So, I'll keep my eyes peeled for any more books.

I hereby give this book
3.5 Stars
Meaning: I liked it, but it wasn't quite amazing.

SST REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: All The Feels by Danika Stone

FullSizeRender-5
All the Feels

College freshman Liv is more than just a fangirl: The Starveil movies are her life… So, when her favorite character, Captain Matt Spartan, is killed off at the end of the last movie, Liv Just. Can’t. Deal.

Tired of sitting in her room sobbing, Liv decides to launch an online campaign to bring her beloved hero back to life. With the help of her best friend, Xander, actor and steampunk cosplayer extraordinaire, she creates #SpartanSurvived, a campaign to ignite the fandom. But as her online life succeeds beyond her wildest dreams, Liv is forced to balance that with the pressures of school, her mother’s disapproval, and her (mostly nonexistent and entirely traumatic) romantic life. A trip to DragonCon with Xander might be exactly what she needs to figure out what she really wants.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

MY THOUGHTS
To Liv, the Starveil movies are her life. She loves the movies and she's deeply immersed in the fandom, making online vids and online friends who share her deep love of Starveil. She can't wait to see the new Starveil movie, only to find out that her favorite character, Spartan, is killed off. Liv refuses to believe that Spartan is dead, so she decides to prove that he is not dead. She starts an online campaign that shoots across the fandom.

Okay, so when I first heard about this book, I knew I had to read it! I've been in this position before, every fangirl (or boy) has. While with me it was books, not movies, and all I did was kill the author off in my own story, I can relate to Liz. Still, fandoms are such a big part of the world now, so it's exciting to see a book that fully explores it.

I enjoyed the characters in this book. As I mentioned, Liz is relatable. She's also a normal girl. She's not one of those redhead and skinny MCs that are unaware of how beautiful they are (this sums up the MCs of a whole lot of YA). She's a normal girl, just starting college, who spends a majority of her time online. I did think she was a bit whiny and dramatic at times, but other than that, I liked her.

As for supporting characters, I really liked Xander. He's the best. Xander is in a completely different fandom than Liz, and doesn't really understand Starveil, but they are such great friends. Xander actually helps Liz out with #StarveilSurvived and even takes her to DragonCon. I seriously love their friendship. I also liked other various characters, but I love Xander. Though, I will say that Liz's mom annoyed me, because of the things she said about fandoms. I understand why Liz's mom is against fandoms, but she did say some horrible things.

As for romance, there is a very slow romance in the book, so you'll be shipping it for a while. But I actually really liked the romance. It never took over the plot!

IN CONCLUSION
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book! It's a fun book about fandoms, friendship, and more. Also, Xander is awesome! So, pick up this book if you want a fun contemporary featuring fandoms!

I hereby give this book
4 Stars!
Meaning: It was amazing!

RT Booklovers Convention 2016 Recap! (+GIVEAWAY)

Home

A few weeks ago I traveled to Las Vegas for the 2016 RT Booklovers Convention! This was my fourth year attending and I had a blast!

My day started at around 8 am. I stayed in the hotel where the convention was being held, with my parents, and I decided to scope out where all the panels would be before the convention started. But when my mom and I went downstairs, we realized that the book fair line already started, so we went back and got my books and got in line.

The line for the early crowd. And my mom is on the left.

The book fair didn't start until 10:30 and went for 3 hours. Basically, the book fair is where you get all your books signed. There were hundreds of authors and you went to their tables to get your books signed. You were only supposed to bring 10 books at a time. I brought over 100 books with me to Vegas, so we had to keep going back to get more (thankfully my dad was sitting with all my books outside the book fair). I got all but I think 5 of my books signed, so it was successful! And fun! I got to see so many authors!

Entering the Book Fair!

After the mad rush to get books signed, we went to the Fierce Reads Sugar Rush Party. When we walked in the door, we were given Fierce Reads bags. In the bags were books (of course) including Nemesis, Been Here All Along, Flawed, as well as some other books. We also got to spin a wheel to get another free book. I got a copy of Kiss Cam. After getting my new books signed, we heading off to the Hogwarts Trivia.

Fierce and Swoon Reads Gift Bag
Not my own picture, but these are the bags that were handed out.

I didn't do so well in Harry Potter Trivia, because I have a horrible memory, but I had fun! My mom and I were in Ravenclaw and Brendan Reichs was our table's prefect. By the way, Brendan Reichs is hilarious!

After that we went to Family Feud, which Brendan Reichs was moderating. (Although, before family feud there was a fire alarm scare...). I'm sure you know the gist of family feud, add authors and book related questions, and you got the idea of what the panel was about.

After that we went to the Match Game. The Match Game was moderated by Gretchen McNeil and was disappointing. The game basically had the same questions asked as last year, so it wasn't as fun.
It was even moderated by Gretchen McNeil last year

Then it was time for the party, basically what I look forward to the most at RT! When we entered in the Teen Day Party, we found a table and sat down to find trivia sheets on the table. Colleen Houck hosted a trivia game. Authors were asked to pick a question, then we all answered on the sheet.

Once the trivia game finished, each table was called to go into the goody room, pretty much the highlight of the night. Each person got a pink bag filled with books and swag. The good room had tables stacked with books, mostly ARCs, and swag. Each person got to take two the first round, but there were enough books and enough swag that every got to go in line more than once.
Teen Day Gift Bags!
The bags given out (not my picture)

All of the authors!

Now, the loot!
Here are all of the books I got! I'm too lazy to link and list them all (if you really want to know what books are pictured, here's my Goodreads shelf), but some I'm really really excited about are: Girl Against the Universe, Wanderlost, The Forgetting, My Lady Jane, and Recreated.

Overall, I had a fabulous time! I love RT and look forward to it every year! Of course, my parents were super nice to me during RT and helped me with my books, so I'm so thankful to have such amazing parents! I hope I can go again, but it's the weekend before finals, so that may not be the best time. Anyway, if you you're thinking about going to RT next year, I recommend it!

GIVEAWAY!
Most of you probably skipped down to this section, which is okay. I picked up some extra copies for you guys! I'm giving away...
-ARC of Places No One Knows
-ARC The Lovely Reckless
-HC The Sin Eater's Daughter
-ARC Flamecaster
and a whole lot of swag! Including Snow Like Ashes buttons, Glittering Court preview, Epic Read magazine, Swoon Reads post its, an a whole lot of bookmarks!

EXCERPT
I pad into the kitchen and hoist myself up onto a stool at the counter. Haydn slides two muffins and a home-made smoothie across to me. “You trying to fatten me up?” I inquire

“You need to eat more when you’re training.”

“I’m sure I read somewhere that you should eat more protein when in training. I doubt you’re supposed to be indulging in calorie-laden treats.”

“Watch your mouth!” Haydn swats me with a dish towel. “Those muffins are made with bran, yoghurt, honey, and fruit. All natural. And totally healthy. Now shut up and eat.”

“Ooh, get you! All right!” I hold my hands up in defeat. “But I doubt I’ll manage two.”

“You can give one to Jarod in work,” he suggests.

I snort. “As if he’d eat anything you prepared! I’d have to lie and tell him I baked it myself.”

Jarod isn’t over his aversion to aliens. And that’s putting it mildly. He absolutely refuses to go anywhere with me outside of work if any of my Saven friends is involved, and he hasn’t ever stepped foot in this apartment. It’s a constant source of tension between us; the cause of more than a few arguments. I understand he’s pissed over the whole memory-erase situation, and the fact that enemy alien ships still hover in our skies doesn’t do much to ease any human’s apprehension, but I’ve tried explaining, time and time again, that we have nothing to fear from Logan and Co., but he won’t hear a word of it.

While I’m grateful that Jarod managed to make it out of Thalassic City safely, and I’m thrilled to be working in the same building as him, sometimes I could happily bash his head against the wall.

Note from the author: This is from the unedited draft and the final version is subject to change.

SST: Interview With Jeff Garvin, Author of Symptoms of Being Human

ABOUT THE BOOK

Symptoms of Being Human
The first thing you’re going to want to know about me is: Am I a boy, or am I a girl?
Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. The thing is . . . Riley isn’t exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in uber-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley’s so-called “normal” life.
On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it’s REALLY like to be a gender-fluid teenager. But just as Riley’s starting to settle in at school—even developing feelings for a mysterious outcast—the blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley’s real identity, threatening exposure. Riley must make a choice: walk away from what the blog has created—a lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe in—or stand up, come out, and risk everything.

INTERVIEW
Describe your book 5 words.
Gender-fluid teen’s blog goes viral.
Or
Feels, laughs, angry, witty, love.

Most asked author question but... what made you want to write this book?
There was a news story in my county about a transgender teen who sued the school district for the right to use the bathroom that aligned with their gender identity rather than their birth-assigned sex. I was deeply moved by their story and woke up three days in a row thinking about it. What would it be like to go to school the day after that story broke? I was inspired by the teen’s bravery and knew I had to write about it.

Do you have any odd writing habits?
Odd? No. I mean, I say an incantation (which I wrote) each morning before I sit down to write, and then I wave the wand that chose me at the Harry Potter theme park in Orlando, and say, “Expecto Patronum!” But I wouldn’t call that “odd.”

Are are you are Plotter or Pantser?
A pantser. I sit down with an idea of what I’m going to write, and then the characters show up and change it. It’s exhilarating and horrifying.

What character(s) did you have the most fun writing about?
Solo was so much fun! Writing the beginning of Symptoms of Being Human was very sad--and then Solo came along and informed me that the book was going to be funny, too. It was a great relief.

What was your favorite scene to write?
The one I can tell you about without spoiling? Probably the scene between Solo and Riley at the vintage 80s video arcade. I love the way those two relate to one another. I had friendships like that in high school, and they saved me.

Random Questions:
Cats or dogs? Yes!
Unicorns or zombies? Zombies.
Favorite color? Black. Or Blue. No, black.
Favorite movie/TV show? Almost Famous/House of Cards
If you had one superpower, what would it be? Invisibility.

Before becoming a novelist, Jeff Garvin acted on TV and toured as the lead singer of a rock band. He has a BFA in Film from Chapman University and lives in Southern California, surrounded by adorable, shedding beasts.
