Short and Simple Reviews: Smile, Sisters, Guts

This is a place for books that I didn't fully review.
Maybe I listed my likes and dislikes, had a little short paragraph, or a few sentences to convey my feelings on the book, but whatever the "review" is, all of them are short and simple. (hence the clever name)

Smile

Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth, and what follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there’s still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly. This coming-of-age true story is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever been in middle school, and especially those who have ever had a bit of their own dental drama.

Review
I've seen this book around quite a lot but I never picked it up! This was a quick read, but an enjoyable one. The story, while not something that many kids go through, carries a lot of elements that kids do go through (braces, awkwardness, friendships, etc.). Raina does a great job of telling her story and I loved the art. I do plan on reading more from her.
I hereby give this book
3.5 Stars
Meaning: I liked it, but it wasn't quite amazing

SistersThree weeks. Two sisters. One car. A True Story

Raina can’t wait to be a big sister. But once Amara is born, things aren’t quite how she expected them to be. Amara is cute, but she’s also a cranky, grouchy baby, and mostly prefers to play by herself. Their relationship doesn’t improve much over the years, but when a baby brother enters the picture and later, when something doesn’t seem right between their parents, they realize they must figure out how to get along. They are sisters, after all.

Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado.

Review
I did not enjoy this one as much as Smile but it is still a great book. The story felt shorter and I finished it pretty quickly. The book flashes between past and present, and I liked how it was depicted, though I found the present a little more interesting (mainly because the past scenes weren't very long). The story is very relatable to anyone who grew up, or is growing up, with a sibling. I do plan on reading more from Raina Telgemeier.

Guts
Raina wakes up one night with a terrible upset stomach. Her mom has one, too, so it's probably just a bug. Raina eventually returns to school, where she's dealing with the usual highs and lows: friends, not-friends, and classmates who think the school year is just one long gross-out session. It soon becomes clear that Raina's tummy trouble isn't going away... and it coincides with her worries about food, school, and changing friendships. What's going on?

Raina Telgemeier once again brings us a thoughtful, charming, and funny true story about growing up and gathering the courage to face -- and conquer -- her fears.

Review
Like the previous two books, this was a fairly quick read. This book discusses some subjects that are not so often candidly discussed, such as IBS, anxiety, and therapy. I liked how the book shows therapy positively and I also think that this book discussing these topics is very important, especially considering the target demographic. The art also did a great job of portraying anxiety, which isn't easy considering how it's not something others can usually visually see. I think because there wasn't a main plot arc that I had difficultly fulling getting into the book, but I do think that it's important that these topics are discussed.
