REVIEW: Accession by Terah Edun

Accession (Sarath Web, #1)
Sixteen-year-old Katherine Thompson wasn’t trained to rule a coven. That was her sister – perfect, beautiful Rose. But when a mysterious plane crash kills off the heir presumptive of the Sandersville coven she has no choice.

After stepping in to fill her sister’s shoes, Katherine realizes she didn’t have a clue – faery wars, depressed trolls and angry unicorns are just the beginning.

For centuries, her family has served the high Queens on both sides of the Atlantic but it is a well-known rule that mid-level witches stay away from high-level Queens.

But when Katherine’s youngest cousin vanishes without a trace in the Atlanta court and no one wants to investigate, Katherine decides to step into the darkness on her own. She will soon discover that nothing, especially in a queen's court, is as it seems.

I received an ecopy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

MY THOUGHTS
After I finished this book, I originally gave it 3 stars, because I did like parts of it, but after thinking about it, I realized that there's more bad than good.

My biggest issue is how misleading the book is. Yes, Katherine does have to fill her sister's shoes after her death, but what bothered me about this was that Rose's death seems to only do that. Sure, Katherine and everyone else is sad, but that very day everyone begins pushing Katherine to help out the town. Katherine also becomes suspicious about her sister's death and decides to investigate, but she doesn't. And it felt like in the very same day, Rose was completely forgotten! Sure, Rose was a complete girl dog (I'm trying not to curse), but I would have expected more grief!
"For centuries, her family has served the high Queens on both sides of the Atlantic but it is a well-known rule that mid-level witches stay away from high-level Queens."
High-level queens are mentioned in this book and there is the whole stay away thing, but Katherine never meets a high-level queen in this book!
"But when Katherine’s youngest cousin vanishes without a trace in the Atlanta court and no one wants to investigate, Katherine decides to step into the darkness on her own. She will soon discover that nothing, especially in a queen's court, is as it seems."
This is the one that really bothers me. This doesn't happen until the very very end of the book and there is no investigation! Because it's the end of the book! The investigation won't happen until the next book!

Another thing that bugged me was how badly edited this book was. I read an ARC copy, so maybe the finish copy is better, but even for an ARC the amount of typos was astonishing!

Now, there was a few things I liked about this book. I found the idea behind the book very interesting. The fact that there are towns ruled by witches and all the other magical elements of the town were interesting. I did find some things really ridiculous <highlight to view spoiler>depressed trolls? Were-peacocks? Seriously?<end of spoiler>, but I was okay with it.

IN CONCLUSION
This book was very misleading. It's not a high-stakes paranormal like the synopsis leads you to believe and is much more childish than I expected. I probably won't read the sequel.

I hereby give this book
2 Wheels
Meaning: It was okay.
