REVIEW: Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception by Maggie Stiefvater

Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception (Books of Faerie, #1)
Sixteen-year-old Deirdre Monaghan is a painfully shy but prodigiously gifted musician. She's about to find out she's also a cloverhand—one who can see faeries. Deirdre finds herself infatuated with a mysterious boy who enters her ordinary suburban life, seemingly out of thin air. Trouble is, the enigmatic and gorgeous Luke turns out to be a gallowglass—a soulless faerie assassin. An equally hunky—and equally dangerous—dark faerie soldier named Aodhan is also stalking Deirdre. Sworn enemies, Luke and Aodhan each have a deadly assignment from the Faerie Queen. Namely, kill Deirdre before her music captures the attention of the Fae and threatens the Queen's sovereignty. Caught in the crossfire with Deirdre is James, her wisecracking but loyal best friend. Deirdre had been wishing her life weren't so dull, but getting trapped in the middle of a centuries-old faerie war isn't exactly what she had in mind . . .
Lament is a dark faerie fantasy that features authentic Celtic faerie lore, plus cover art and interior illustrations by acclaimed faerie artist Julia Jeffrey.

THE RUN-DOWN

Deirdre Monaghan is a talented singer and harpist. During a school music competition, she meets a strange boy named Luke Dillon. Crazy things begin to happen. She finds four-leaf clovers everywhere and starts seeing things. Somehow, Luke is tied into this...

MY THOUGHTS
Let me get this straight: I like Maggie's work.
I liked The Wolves of Mercy Wolves.
I really liked The Raven Boys.
And I LOVED The Scorpio Races.
But this book has to be my least favorite.
My major annoyance with this book is the insta-love.
Deirdre and Luke barely know each other and they're soul-mates?
I would believe it better if they knew each other longer and if their feelings are shown (intense kissing scenes don't count).

Other than that, some things weren't quite explained well enough
.

But that didn't bother me as much as the insta-love.

In fact, if the romance was not insta-love or played such a major role, I would've liked this book.

I hereby give this book
2 Wheels
Meaning: It was okay.

  1. I like your review a lot. Straight and to the point! Yeah, I have to agree. It's probably my least favorite Maggie book. But I feel like even my least favorite Maggie book is still pretty likeable! I totally agree with the instalove. It didn't bother me as much, but I totally get it. Seems like there's a lot of Instalove these days! Great review!
