Book Blitz: Fractured Suns by Theresa Kay (Excerpt & Giveaway!)

This is such a fantastic series! If you're a fan of sci-fi, dystopians, or aliens, then this series is a must read! Today i'm participating in the release day blitz for the second book, Fractured Suns! Scroll down to learn more about the book, read an excerpt, and enter the giveaway!
(Here are my reviews for book 1 and book 2!)

ABOUT THE BOOK
Fractured Suns (Broken Skies, #2)We came in peace. Lie.We had no role in the Collapse. Lie.I have always been honest. Lie.I never lied to her. Truth.
Reunited with her brother, and surrounded by Flint, Peter and her new-found grandfather, Jax Mitchell has still never felt more alone. The choice to follow Rym back to the city to find answers and see Lir is an easy one, but their reunion is cut short and Jax is forced to leave Lir behind. She finds herself traveling with some unexpected companions and heading back toward a place she’d hoped to never see again.
After being imprisoned—and tortured—on the orders of his uncle, Lir hasn’t seen daylight or linked to anyone in weeks. After a lifetime of connection, the pain and loneliness is almost too much to bear. Elated that Jax actually came, Lir finds renewed hope and the strength to continue fighting his uncle's influence over the E'rikon, even when things look hopeless and Lir’s been branded a traitor by the very people he’s trying to save.
While Jax and Lir fight separate battles, their missions have more in common than they realize. It’s a race against time to stop men driven only by greed and power. But the ones they trust the most might be the very people working against them—and "family" doesn't mean what it used to. Will they recognize their friends from their enemies in time to save the people they love or will they lose each other in the process?

EXCERPT
I push the door open and slide through. The door closes behind me, leaving me in the dark, and my hand instinctively searches the wall for a light switch.
A familiar voice in the darkness. Jax?”
I inhale sharply at the naked hope in that sound and the flare of elation that crashes into me from somewhere across the room. Squinting my eyes, I try to make him out. “Can I get some light here?” I say. “Not all of us can see in the dark.”
There’s movement to my left, and then a soft blue light fills the room. Not much, but enough for my eyes to finally find his.
“Hello.” Lir’s eyes travel over my face with a longing look. He steps forward until he’s within two feet of me, the closest we’ve been to each other in weeks.
If Rym looked tired, Lir looks exhausted. The charcoal-colored uniform he wears highlights the dark bags under his eyes and contrasts deeply with the paleness of his skin. The gold in his hair and eyes looks tarnished and dull. He’s lost weight, too—his features are more gaunt than angular.
“How have you been?” he says.
His almost nonchalant greeting is making it easy for me to hold on to the fire of my anger, and I inject my words with heat. “How have I been?” My voice creeps up with each word. “What the hell? You asked me to come here, to risk not only my life but everyone else’s, to ask me how I’ve been? I’ve been just peachy. How about you?” I close my eyes and take a deep breath, swallowing back the other words that are fighting to pass my lips: Why did you leave me? I’ve missed you. I’m sorry.
When I open my eyes again, he’s moved closer. I’m frozen in his gaze, a burn forming behind my eyes from the tears I refuse to let him see.
He lifts one eyebrow in a graceful arch. “Based on the context in which I have heard you use that word… I believe I’ve been peachy too.”
A sound that’s half laugh, half sob explodes from my mouth, and I throw myself into his arms. It’s the only thing I’ve really wanted to do since the moment I saw him, and though I know it’s stupid and impulsive, I can’t hold myself back anymore. There’s still a whisper of suspicion in the back of my mind, but I ignore it.
Lir jolts, a splash of cautious elation flowing from him, before wrapping his arms around me and pulling me close to his chest. One of his hands presses into the small of my back, a slight tremble in his fingers. He relaxes into the hug. His arms and shoulders loosen and his breathing steadies.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The only person she knows who had a subscription to Writer's Digest at eleven and was always excited to write research papers, Theresa has been putting words to paper since a young age. Living in the mountains of central Virginia with her husband and two kids, she works as a paralegal by day, binges on Netflix at night and finds bits of time in between reading almost everything she can get her hands on and laundry to craft stories that tend to feature broken characters in sci-fi or paranormal worlds, with a touch of romance thrown in for good measure.
She's constantly lost in one fictional universe or another and is a self-proclaimed "fangirl" who loves being sucked in to new books or TV shows. Theresa originally wanted to write horror novels as an ode to her childhood passion for Stephen King novels, but between her internal Muse's ramblings and the constant praise for her sci-fi pieces from her writer's group - The Rebel Writers - she knew she should stick with what was working.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I'm Jacqueline Garlick, author of young adult and new adult fiction. I love strong heroines, despise whiny sidekicks, and adore a good story about a triumphant underdog. (Don't you?)
I love to read, write, paint (walls and paper). I have a love/hate relationship with chocolate, grammar, and technology and would rather hang out with a dog, than a cat. I prefer creating things to cleaning things, and believe laughter is a one-stop-shop solution to all that ails you. You will always find a purple wall (or two) in my house (currently in my writing room), and there may or may not be a hidden passageway that leads to a mystery room. (Okay, so you won't find a hidden passageway, but a girl can dream, can't she?) Oh, and tea. There will always be tea.
My writing style has been described as edgy and rule-breaking, and by some--a touch Tim Burton-esque. Because of this, I am often referred to as the Quentin Tarantino of YA among writing friends.
In my former life, I was a teacher (both grade school and college-don't ask), but more recently I've been a graduate of Ellen Hopkin's Nevada Mentor Program and a student of James Scott Bell, Christopher Vogler and Don Maass. An excerpt from Lumière earned me the 2012 Don Maass Break Out Novel Intensive Scholarship.
Lumière--A Romantic Steampunk Fantasy--my debut novel, is the recipient of an indieBRAG Medallion!!! B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree October 15, 2014) I am so proud! (LUMIERE by Jacqueline E. Garlick is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells a reader that this book is well worth their time and money!) Book II of the ILLUMINATION PARADOX SERIES, is out January 26th, now on pre-order.
Also, check out my young adult contemporary romantic/mystery serial, IF ONLY, where reluctant telepathic sleuth Kyla Cooper must embrace her powers and risks all to solve the mystery of what happened to her boyfriend Denver Munro, becoming his voice of truth, before he has no voice at all...

Interview with Erica Cameron (author of Deadly Sweet Lies) + Giveaway!

Today I'll be interviewing Erica Cameron! She's the author of Sing Sweet Nightingale as well as Deadly Sweet Lies, coming out this August! Look below for the interview and scroll down for the giveaway! But first, here's some info about the book:

Deadly Sweet Lies (The Dream War Saga, #2)
Nadette Lawson knows when you’re lying.
Every night for the past two years, the Balasura have visited her dreams, enticing her to enter their world. And every night she’s seen through their lies. Now, they’re tired of playing in the shadows and they begin to stalk her in the waking world. It’s no longer just an invitation; if Nadette doesn’t join them, they’ll take her family. Forever. She needs help, and the haven she’s seeking may be just out of reach.
Julian Teagan is a master of deception.
To survive, he has to convince the world his mother isn’t useless, that everything’s fine, otherwise he’ll lose what little he has left in this life. He knows the lying won’t be enough to keep him and his mother in the shadows, but it’s all he knows. The only light of truth is Orane, a Balasura who sees past Julian’s facade and challenges him to face the darkness.
Then Orane is killed, and Julian learns his mentor was far from innocent. The Balasura have hunted children like him for centuries, and their next target, Nadette is his one chance at finally being a part of something real. If Julian can just convince her to trust him…

INTERVIEW
Describe your book 5 words.
Truth, secrets, fear, trust, and family.

I know you get this question a lot, but how were you inspired to write this series?
A few years ago my friend Lani Woodland called me to ask if I had a paranormal short story I wanted to submit to a young adult anthology. I didn’t because short isn’t my thing at all, but I promised her I’d think about it and see what I could come up with. I was working at Border’s at the time and one morning two songs played back to back while I was opening the store one morning. First it was “Mariella” by Kate Nash, a song that talks about a girl who has decided to stop speaking and was inordinately pleased with her own silence. I wrote myself a note--”Why would a girl be happy about not speaking?”--and then I moved on. At least until the next song: “Creation Lake” by Silversun Pickups. There’s a line in that song that says “There are 24 parts in a day that divide me from you.” The first questions my not-quite-awake brain comes up with is “Well, what about the twenty-fifth part of the day? What happens then?” Suddenly I had a character and a concept and the entire Dream War Saga universe built from those two starting points. Mariella was, obviously, named after the song that inspired her existence.

What was your favorite scene to write?
There’s a moment in the book where Julian has a personal epiphany about his asexuality and it thrilled me to be able to put that moment in the book. It’s especially important because it was literally the last major moment added to the book and because I was going through a similar epiphany while I was writing this. It took that long both to add it to Julian’s story and my own because I hadn’t ever heard of asexuality in the context of human orientations until last year. That scene and the discussion he has with one of the other characters is most definitely the moment in the book that I have the strongest tie to.

Do you have any odd writing habits?
Possibly my lack of actual “habits”? How, where, and when I write changes constantly depending on what else is going on in my life. As long as I manage to get something done in a day, I consider that day a success. The “how” isn’t that important.

What character(s) did you have the most fun writing about?
The cast list of my series expands exponentially in Deadly Sweet Lies and it was so much fun getting to play with the diverse set of people and personalities that now exist! In the group we meet through Nadette and Julian Lexi is sweet and fun, Kelsey is wise beyond her years, Clarke is an enforcer, Vasha is the technician, Anya is the artist, Tanner is the caretaker, Beth is the scholar, and Johanna is the leader. They all have their roles in the community they’ve built and the interactions of their personalities were amazingly fun to write!

Are are you are Plotter or Pantser?
Somewhere in between the two! Every book is a different process for me in terms of how I meet and develop the characters, how I figure out the plot, and how I actually write the book. However, what I have figured out is that detailed plotting is impossible for me to accomplish until I have written a fair amount (usually somewhere between ten to twenty thousand words) of a book. Until I get to know a character, there’s no way that I can predict how and why they’ll react in certain situations. Even after that, though, I still find outlining or summarizing difficult. I prefer editing!

What book(s) defined your childhood? Or got you into reading?
I do not remember a time when books weren’t a part of my life. My mom always read to me and my sisters and my dad read The Hobbit to us twice.Movies were big in my house too and my father is probably one of the reasons I am perfectly capable of rewatching with pleasure a movie I’ve already seen a hundred times. That being said, the first author I remember developing a particular passion for is Tamora Pierce and her Tortall books. To this day there’s nothing I don’t love about her books and her universes.

What was the strangest thing you had to research for this book?
I spent a lot of time looking up train schedules and train station layouts, stalking Google Images to find interior shots so I could describe the station. Also, bad neighborhoods in Vegas. I spent a fair amount of time looking for really seedy apartments near the touristy section of Las Vegas and, luckily, found exactly what I was looking for behind the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino.

What made you want to become an author?
I’ve always loved hearing/reading/watching stories, but it wasn’t until I discovered I wasn’t that bad at creating them myself that I began to see it as a viable career choice. Fanfiction taught me that I was indeed capable of stringing together enough sentences to form a book and my first finished attempt at a novel (an angel book called Fallen that will never see the light of day) showed me that all my years of reading hadn’t been wasted because I really did know things about plot and tension and characters. Honestly even with all the stressful bits of writing and the publishing industry, I can’t think of anything else I want to do.

Random Questions:
Cats or dogs?
Both! I am a bad pet owner (the dogs I’ve owned are always so poorly trained!), but I love playing with other people’s fur babies.

Unicorns or zombies?
Unicorns!

Favorite color?
Blue. All of the blues!

Favorite movie/TV show?
So many. Love stories, disaster scenarios, action/adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, period pieces--I really just love stories. I’m a notoriously non-critical viewer. Just entertain me and I’m happy!

If you had one superpower, what would it be?

Almost all of the superpowers have pretty massive drawbacks, but I’ve always been fascinated by the ability to have complete control over your own body and brain--enhance your own senses, control your perception of time, permanently record or delete memories. It seems like it’d be the most useful power to have in day to day life.

Erica Cameron
After a lifelong obsession with books, Erica Cameron spent her college years getting credit for reading and learning how to make stories of her own. Erica graduated with a double major in psychology and creative writing from Florida State University and began pursuing a career as an author.
Erica is many things but most notably the following: writer, reader, editor, dance fan, choreographer, singer, lover of musical theater, movie obsessed, sucker for romance, ex-Florida resident, and quasi-recluse. She loves the beach but hates the heat, has equal passion for the art of Salvador Dali and Venetian Carnival masks, has a penchant for unique jewelry and sun/moon décor pieces, and a desire to travel the entire world on a cruise ship. Or a private yacht. You know, whatever works.
Her debut novel Sing Sweet Nightingale released March 4, 2014 from Spencer Hill Press. It is the first book in The Dream War Saga, a four-book young adult series.

REVIEW: A School For Brides by Patrice Kindl (+GIVEAWAY)

A School for Brides: A Story of Maidens, Mystery, and MatrimonyThe eagerly awaited companion to the award-winnng Keeping the Castle.

The Winthrop Hopkins Female Academy of Lesser Hoo, Yorkshire, has one goal: to train its students in the feminine arts with an eye toward getting them married off. This year, there are five girls of marriageable age. There’s only one problem: the school is in the middle of nowhere, and there are no men.

Set in the same English town as Keeping the Castle, and featuring a few of the same characters, here’s the kind of witty tribute to the classic Regency novel that could only come from the pen of Patrice Kindl!

MY THOUGHTS
This was a very quick and easy read with charming fun! In fact, I enjoyed it a bit more than Keeping the Castle, which this is technically a companion to.

This book follows a multiple cast of characters, including 8 girls of The Winthrop Hopkins Female Academy. The school is supposed to teach them to be ladies so they can find a husband. The problem: there are no eligible gentlemen in Lesser Ho.

I need to first mention that this book IS NOT A SEQUEL! This is a companion to Keeping the Castle, since it takes place in the same place, but the major characters are different. The characters of Keeping the Castle do make appearances, though, so fans can look forward to that.

It took a bit to get onto the book. This book focuses a lot of characters, and I mean a lot. There are the girls, the gentlemen, the inhabitant of Lesser Ho, as well as others. The book kind of jumps around from character to character and takes some getting used to. eventually, though, I was very entertained by the strange cast of characters and the multiple events afoot!

IN CONCLUSION
Overall, this was quite an enjoyable read! If you're looking for a quick, fun read, this would be a great place to look!

I hereby give this book
3 Wheels
Meaning: I liked it!

dream casters light banner

dream casters
Mr. Sandman, send me a dream, ta da da da…..Seventeen year old Chasity Blake knows the Sandman is just a silly children’s story parents tell their children to get them to sleep. At least she thought it was, until the day a mysterious, light golden sand appeared in her hands during a high school prank that went horribly wrong. A sand that has the power to send anyone it touches into a deep, sound sleep.
Fearing she had lost her mind, Chasity soon discovers the shocking truth of her heritage- she is a Dream Caster. Chasity was never supposed to be raised on the Domain, or what humans call Earth and she is forced to return to her true birth place, Revera – the world of Dreams.
However, in Revera there is no balance between good, the Light Casters, and darkness, the Shadow Casters, and Chasity is caught square in the middle. She soon learns that there is no place for anyone containing both the light and the darkness within them, and the shocking truth that if anyone in Revera ever discovered her shadow self, Chasity would be thrown into the Oblivion – the world of Nightmares.
Dreams are always more than they seem, and this time Chasity is going to discover just how different they can be.
