Cover vs Cover: White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This week's pick is...

White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements, #1) VS.    VS.White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements, #1)
Take One                        Take Two                        Take Three
I actually already did a cover vs cover post for this book, but a new cover came out recently, so I'm doing it again! Last time I talked about how Jennifer L. Armentrout just couldn't please the covers gods. I love this book, but I absolutely hate covers 1 & 2. The only reason why I picked up the book was because I trusted Armentrout and I heard positive things about the book. Take One looks like an NA romance, which I like to avoid. I don't like kissing on covers at all. Take Two looks like an indie book in which they had no budget for a good cover. Take One won last time only because it had color. Now, I'm really glad that there's a new cover. It still isn't the best, it's kind of a generic paranormal/fantasy cover, but at least it tells the reader that this is a paranormal book and is more aesthetically pleasing!
 Final Verdict: Take Three

Cover vs Cover: Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

This week's pick is...

31423196VS.  39680088
Original                        Redesign
I admit that I was a bit upset at first when the cover for this book was redesigned. I loved the Original cover. The title treatment is eye-catching and interesting and I loved the spots of bright colors! It doesn't quite say what the book is about, but it is clear that it is sci-fi. The redesign does say more clearly that the book is sci-fi and that it takes place in space, with the planets in the corner, but I missed it the many other times I saw this cover. In fact, I didn't notice the planets until now. The cover does have a vintage sci-fi vibe to it, but I don't like faces on covers of books and having different effects and images on top of the faces looks messy to me. This one is not as bad, but as the series continues with the same cover trend, I have a hard time telling what all is on the covers.

Cover vs Cover: Royals/Prince Charming by Rachel Hawkins

This week's pick is...

35997816VS.  43355180
Original                        Redesign
Both say contemporary romance and both kind of tell you that there is royalty within the book. Royals makes sure that you know that the book includes royalty, but it looks a bit too fancy for what the book is really about. The book is about a girl whose sister is marrying royalty, but she wants to avoid the spotlight. Royals screams "rich girl", though, which isn't really the vibe of the book. Prince Charming is a bit more laid back. It doesn't say royalty as much, but it definitely pulls off the contemporary romance vibe and tells us more about the MC. I also like the lighter colors with the red accents and the drawn characters. I've been a fan of covers with drawn characters lately.

Cover vs Cover: Trouble Is a Friend of Mine by Stephanie Tromly

This week's pick is...

23354047VS.  27209370
Original                        Redesign
There's not too much of a difference between these two covers. They both have the same idea, really. This is a humorous book that also tackles serious mysteries, so both capture that odd whimsy. I like the Redesign a little bit more. To be honest, it's mainly because it has Digby on the cover. The original cover put Digby on the back cover instead. I also like that it has vibrant colors which catch my attention a lot more than the gray. By the way, I completely recommend this series.

Cover vs Cover: Hold Still by Nina LaCour

This week's pick is...

Hold Still VS.  Hold Still  VS.42815543
Hardcover                Original Paperback                 New Paperback
I actually already did a cover vs cover post for this book, but a new cover came out recently, so I'm doing it again! Last time I had a hard time choosing because the Hardcover seems to reflect the theme of grief and includes doodles and notes behind the girl, which is important to the plot. The blue Paperback cover won though because it was more ascetically pleasing. Now, for the new cover, I really like the hand-drawn aesthetic and the fact that it matches We Are Okay. I feel like it matches the book more than the blue cover, with the drawn quality and the two girls shown on the cover.  I'm not really a fan of the salmon color, though, and I'm not sure if it shows the grief that is a big theme in this book (it is about a girl dealing with her friend's suicide and reading her friend's journal). Although, if I look closely the two shadows become only one. Maybe it is intentional? To be honest, I still like the Original Paperback more. I just don't like that salmon color.

Cover vs. Cover: Venom by Fiona Paul

This week's pick is...

12534178VS.  16101159 VS.29081347
Hardcover                      Paperback                    New Ebook
I really don't like how the covers progressed for this book. The first cover is great. There is a focus on the girl's beautiful mask and you can tell it is historical fiction. The paperback isn't terrible, I like the colors, but I dislike how it wants to show there is a romance in this book. It shows the reader that the book takes place in Venice, but it's a pretty generic cover. Now, the last cover goes in that direction even more. It makes it more obvious that it's a romance and even more obvious where it takes place. I don't like the last cover at all. I can let it pass a little I guess because I think it was republished independently with that cover, so they maybe weren't able to create a perfect cover, but if I saw that cover in a store, I would not be picking it up. None of the covers really show that the book has mystery elements, but overall, the first cover is the best.

Cover vs Cover: The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

This week's pick is...

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)VS.  The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)
Original                        Redesign
I understand why they redesigned the book, since the movie come out last year, but they really didn't try very hard. I wasn't a fan of the original cover, it's just a plain background with a symbol on it. The only reason why you know it's dystopian is because that was the dystopian cover trend at the time. You would think that they would do something different with the redesign, as there are new cover trends, but no. It's just a symbol floating in the sky with a random street view. You can't even tell it's a dystopian street view. I guess there are some tilted telephone poles way back there and maybe some of those cars are beat-up? I can't really tell. Mostly we just get a nice view of a van. Also, why is the D a different color? It's been a while since I read the book, is that important for some reason? Anyway, even though the original is not eye-catching, I like it better than the redesign.

Cover vs Cover: Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

This week's pick is...

23308087VS.  Flame in the Mist (Flame in the Mist, #1)
Original                Redesign
I really like the original cover. It is very eye-catching and has lots of bright colors, though the objects don't quite look like they're in the same space. I like the fact that the redesign actually has the main character's face, but that's it. It's a pretty cover, but I'm honestly not really a fan of monochromatic covers and it does not tell me what genre the book is. Looking at that cover, I might think it's a contemporary book instead of a fantasy. I wish I liked it more because, again, we actually get to see the character's face, but overall the other cover wins because it reads more fantasy.

Cover vs Cover: The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski

This week's pick is...

The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)VS.  The Winner's Curse - Marie Rutkoski, pb redesign:
Original                Redesign
The Redesign isn't bad. In fact, I would've liked it more if it weren't for the fact that I have the original cover to compare it to. The original cover is one of my favorite covers, I love the dress, the title treatment, the perspective. I like the badass pose in the redesign, but it's not as great as the original cover. It's also been pointed out, I don't remember where, that the poses in the new covers, eerily match the poses for the Throne of Glass series. These new covers also oddly remind me of the Cahill Witch Chronicles by Jessica Spotswood.

Cover vs Cover: Don't Fail Me Now by Una LaMarche

This week's pick is...

Don't Fail Me NowVS.  Don't Fail Me Now
Original                Redesign
I'm kind of torn here. I really like the illustrated version because of how all the major characters are pictured, but I'm not a fan of the blue and yellow color scheme. I'll have to go with the redesign because of the bright colors. I'm sorry, but I love colors.

Cover vs Cover: Thanks for the Trouble by Tommy Wallach

This week's pick is...

Thanks For the Trouble - Tommy Wallach: VS.  Thanks for the Trouble
Original                Redesign
For some reason, I'm not a fan of the original. It just looked too plain and I'm not the biggest fan of the glaring white text. I obviously haven't read this book yet, but the redesign seems to fit in more. The synopsis mentions that the MC hangs out in hotels and meets a silver-haired girl. I fill that this is better pictured in the redesign

Cover vs Cover: On the Road to Find Out by Rachel Toor

This week's pick is...

On the Road to Find OutVS.  On the Road to Find Out
Original                Redesign
I haven't read this one, but I would be more inclined to read the redesign. I'm not a big fan of the green on green. The placement of the runner feels out to be as well because she's just jogging on green stuff. I think the hearts in the redesign are cheesy, but I love the colors and the title placement more, as well as the fact that she's actually running on something.

Original                Redesign
I haven't read this book, but based on the synopsis, the redesign fits the book better. While I like the text treatment in the original, it looks like a girly contemporary. I actually like the redesign more because it looks more like a fun photo!

Cover vs Cover: The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

This week's pick is...

VS.  The Forbidden Wish
Original                Redesign
I admit that the dots on the original are obnoxious, but I just don't like the placement of the face on the redesign. Or the fact that there's a face in general. I always prefer covers without people on them, okay. I would like the redesign if it weren't for the face. The font is pretty and the background brings a nice contrast, but that face ruins it for me (although, maybe it would be too simple without it?). Anyway, I like the colors in the original and it's still very obvious what it's about.

Cover vs Cover: Secret by Brigid Kemmerer

This week's pick is...

Secret (Elemental, #4)VS.  Secret (Elemental, #4)
Original                Redesign
The redesign isn't spectacular, but it sure is better than the original. The original has always looked awkward to me, with the posing and kind of photoshop quality. Mainly, though, what makes the original cover misleading is the fact that the main character is gay.

The first cover isn't bad, but I prefer the redesign. It's nice, simple, and there's no person on the cover! I admit that I prefer covers without people on them.
