REVIEW: KAD by Kin Asdi

KAD (The adventures of KAD book 1)
John is an unassuming but talented high school sophomore who finds a strange object while walking in the woods one quiet Sunday morning. There, catching beams of sunlight shining through the trees is an alien object! The object is a Kinetic Assistant Disk, or KAD. It’s smooth, silver, and about the size of a hockey puck. And John soon learns that it can be dangerous, too!
Although barely able to understand where the disk came from and what it is capable of, John quickly realizes that he’s the only one who can save KAD before it loses power and is lost forever. The path to save KAD takes John on an adventure that draws on all of his wits and physical abilities. To rescue KAD, John must hide it from everyone, including a tenacious federal agent who’s determined to get his hands on KAD, at any cost. But keeping KAD hidden proves to be quite difficult, as the disk becomes unstable and erratic, putting John’s school and the entire neighborhood in jeopardy. KAD’s actions even get in the way of John’s budding romance with his high school sweetheart, Lena. Soon, however, John and Lena must work together in a race against the clock to save KAD. Their adventure brings them in the line of fire with the federal agents and sends them to distant alien locations, all while experiencing the potency of first love and dealing with the usual setbacks faced by all teenagers, including well-meaning parents, exams, and school activities.

Can they save KAD in time?

MY THOUGHTS
I have certain key words that cause me to pick up a book. With this one, all I had to read was 'alien object' and I needed to read it!

This book begins with a teenager named John who ends up finding an odd intelligent object in the woods that calls itself KAD. John takes KAD home and realizes that having KAD around has many advantages, but it's not only hard, but dangerous to hide as well. With the help of Lena, John's neighbor and possible girlfriend, John will figure out how to help KAD from losing power and from the government agents trying to get their hands on it.

First off: Can I have a KAD? Seriously, this guy can do literally anything! He can teleport, travel to other worlds, create items out of air, create a mind connection, anything you can think of! I honestly really love the idea behind this book and the plot in general! Really, all the idea put into place to create KAD is amazing!

I did have issues with the pacing, though I shouldn't complain. There is a lull in the book where not a whole lot happens. At this point in the book, KAD is gone (long story), so this portion actually feels oddly like a contemporary. In this part, there's a lot of development in John and Lena's relationship, which is why I really can't complain, because that is very important to the book! Also, probably my favorite part of their relationship comes from this part (more on this later)! The pacing definetly does pick up closer to the end and I actually loved portions near the end, where we got to know even more about what KAD does, but it does have a slow middle. It doe pick up though and, believe me, it makes sense!

I have a love-hate relationship with the romance. In the beginning, I really liked John and Lena's romance. They had a friend to love romance going on and I love those, but I also loved how they still had a relationship where they could still be friends in a wa. As, they loved each other, but they weren't always kissing and such, having fun conversations with one another. Issue: they did eventually become too cheesy for me. Their conversations got a bit cheesy and I thought they were going too fast (I'm a prude though,so...). When their conversations got fun again, I began to love the relationship again! See how this is confusing! Anyway, I always have issues with romance in books, so don't take my word for it.

Now, the ending! I really really liked the ending! It ended in a cliffhanger, but I'm quickly beginning to realize that I actually LOVE cliffhangers, when done right (This one was done right!). I can't say how it ended, but there is something hinted at for the next book that I am really excited about! <highlight to view spoiler>ALIENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!</end of spoiler>

IN CONCLUSION
I really think this was a great start to a new series! I had issues with the romance (but I also liked it?) and there's a lull, but that's it! This was a really great new sci-fi with very interesting ideas! I am very much looking forward to reading the next book!

I hereby give this book
3 Wheels
Meaning: I liked it!
