REVIEW: The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

The Paper Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy, #1)
Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

I received an ecopy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

MY THOUGHTS
This was such a new and unique book! I was intrigued by this book when I first heard of it because I thought the idea of a magician who works with paper very interesting!

The magic system was what I liked most about this book. I already mentioned how much I loved the idea that of a paper magician, but I also really liked how the magic system was set up. The magicians basically bind themselves to an element (glass, fire, rubber, paper, etc.). And, to be honest, I loved the entire magic system. I also find the how heart thing very curious. I can't go in depth, due to spoilers, but I found the, uh, traveling? interesting.

As I've said many times before, I'm not a big fan of romances in books, they generally annoy me, so I was thankful that romance did not play a large role in this book. This book mainly focuses on Ceony learning to be a paper magician and then trying to save Magician Thane's life. Though, there is a hint of romance to come.

I thought this book was more of a fun book, though. It was a very short, quick, and entertaining, but it was great at the time, not really a book that will make it to my all-time favorites.

IN CONCLUSION
This book is unique, adventurous, and entertaining!
If you want a quick, new magic book, I definitely recommend it!
Now, I am continuing the series. In fact, I already have!

I hereby give this book
4 Wheels!
Meaning: It was amazing!
