Bookish Rants & Rambles: The Twistiest of Plots

Bookish Rants and Rambles is basically where I either rant or ramble about something dealing with books.

I have a confession to make: I love plot twists.
I love it when an author surprising me. I love that moment when I am taken completely by surprise and then look back and see that everything was planned out from the get-go! That there were so many hints to that plot twist that I didn't see! IT'S JUST SO GENIUS!!!
A plot twist in a book can be a defining moment for me. If a book bores me, if the characters annoy me, or if I'm just not feeling the book, a plot twist can completely change my opinion on a book. I just love being shocked so much! But the most surprising fact about plot twists, is that I love it when an author screws up my mind.
I could be like this on the outside, but still love it! This is what messed up about my opinion on plot twists: I can hate an author for what they did to my characters, but love them for being such a genius and surprising me.

What do you think of plot twists?

  1. I like plot twists! I don't, however, like reading books that are so predictable that they make me think that there must be a major twist coming up, because otherwise the whole thing is just too boring... and then there isn't any sort of a twist at all, or it was so obvious that I already guessed and therefore wasn't surprised. I've read a few like that lately. Cinder by Marissa Meyer comes to mind.

One of the better "twisty" books I've read was Surrender by Sonya Hartnett. That book is twisted in more ways than one... but it's also really good!

  2. I actually normally hate plot twists, lol. It's why I didn't really like GONE GIRL, A CROWN OF MIDNIGHT, DANGEROUS GIRLS or a whole lot of others. The only exception is WE WERE LIARS and that's because the reader was set up to expect something from the beginning. The organization in that book was amazing.

I don't like them because, to me, if you're relying on plot twists, you're not a very good writer. And so often these twists come out of left field and I'm sitting here like... why would the narrator hide that when this is 1st person narrative? Plot twists can be very well done. But it's very rare.

  3. I absolutely adore plot twists! I know this isn't books, but some of my favorite movies have plot twists built into them that mess with me for weeks like Donnie Darko and The Butterfly Effect. I did like Gone Girl, but the twist was predictable. I haven't read We Were Liars but have been told it's awesome. :)

  4. I tend to love them if they're done well! I love not seeing it coming - but not so much when you can predict it. Maybe not the nature of the twist but simply but that there will be one coming. I loved the twists in Gone Girl, as well as The False Prince, and We Were Liars! :)
