Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Book Turn-Offs

Hosted each week by The Broke and the Bookish, it's a meme for listing the top ten for everything bookish.

With a lot of these books, I will still pick up the book anyway, just to give it a chance, but these "turn offs" makes it much more less likely that I will ever eventually read the book.

*In no certain order*

1. "Perfect for fans of Hunger Games/Twilight!" (and other variations of this)
I have a huge dislike towards Twilight, but love the Hunger Games.
With Twilight it's obvious, I am not a fan of Twilight so why should I read a book recommended for Twilight fans.
With The Hunger Games, It's the fact that most books that say things like "The next Hunger Games!" I usually end up not liking it. (A recent one I read was: Glow)

2. Shirtless Guys on Covers
I really hate it when there's a shirtless guy on the cover of a book. Not only does it disgust me (keep in mind that I am an innocent teenage girl), but it gives people the wrong idea of the types of books I read. I actually almost didn't read City of Bones because of this.

3. People Kissing on Covers
I'm weird in a way that I'm okay with kissing in books but I can't handle seeing it in real life  If I see a movie and people kiss each other, I have to look away. And again, it gives people the wrong idea.
One amazing book that has this but I ended up reading anyway was The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight.

4. New Adult
A major reason why I stay away from these is the fact that many of them have those covers that I mentioned above, but a lot of New Adult seem to be really... steamy. While some people like steaminess in books, I DO NOT! It makes me blush like crazy! (Innocent teenage girl!)

5. Obvious Love Triangle in Blurb
I am not a fan of Love Triangles. If there is a mention of two obvious love interests in the blurb, I will most likely turn away.

6. "I'm actually *insert extremely large age here*"
Meaning that the love interest in the book is actually over 100 years old! I obviously don't actually know this until I actually read the book, but it causes my opinion of the book to drop.

7. Forbidden Romance
This has been done way too many times. I am getting sick and tired of it!

8. Insta-Love
Do I honestly need to explain this?

9. Way Too Much Romance
(Wow! I'm on a romance hate-fest!)
This really bugs me when the romance distracts the plot. Like, for example, the couple are supposed to be running for their lives or saving the world but are making out instead.

10. Surprise! You're Not Human!
Books where the main character finds out that they're a paranormal creature.
I used to like these kind of books but lately there has been way too many of them!
And it also annoys me because I haven't gotten this surprise.

Well, I'm sorry about my mini-rants!
But what are your book turn-offs?

REVIEW: The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd

The Madman's Daughter (The Madman's Daughter, #1)

In the darkest places, even love is deadly.

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.

The Run-Down Juliet Moreau used to be part of the rich society until the scandal that pronounced her father as a madman.
But that was many years ago. Now Juliet's mother is dead, her father thought to be dead, and she works as a maid.
But after discovering that her father might not be dead after all, running into her an old friend, and basically getting fired from her job, she gets taken to the island where her father has lived all these years.
But strange things are going on at the island...

My Thoughts Apparently, this is a retelling of The Island of Dr. Moreau Which I haven't even heard of until this book came out.
But I read this book anyway!! (YAY!)

I really did like this book.
I loved how it was written, I loved how it was put together...
To summarize, I basically loved it.
This book though is, well, creepy.
Strangely, I did not have a problem with that!

The Romance There's this unspoken rule that every YA book must have romance!
So, of course, this book had it too.
I was not a fan of the romance.
It seemed to take away some of the focus.
The story is mainly supposed to focus on the island, the madman, the creatures, and all that other happy stuff!
But the romance got some unnecessary attention.
There was also a teensy little love triangle.
Okay, maybe not a teensy one but the love triangle added to my annoyance.
Juliet would act like she completely chose one guy and then she will start thinking about the other guy or start doubting herself.

I usually don't have a problem with romance but it just didn't do it for me in this book.

The Ending OH
MY
CHEESE

THAT
ENDING

I did not see any of that coming. Believe me when I say that the ending is full of surprises.
And a cliffhanger...

In Conclusion I believe the only problem I really had with this book was the romance.
There were some scenes that I didn't see the point of (Usually romance scenes) but everything else was AMAZING!
If I have not made it obvious, I really loved this book.

So do I recommend this book? Yes, yes I do. But if you're the type of person that avoids creepy/ horror stories? This book is not for you.

I hereby give this book...
5 Wheels!!
Meaning: I absolutely LOVED this book!
